A New Practical Guide to Rhetorical Gesture and Action
Based on Henry Siddons’ 1807 illustrated actors guide for the London stage, the NTUSA’s A New Practical Guide to Rhetorical Gesture and Action documents the stars and stalwarts of New York’s experimental theater community. Published by 53rd State Press, the book includes 36 illustrations by Jesse Hawley of contemporary actors re-interpreting gestures from the original, commentary by Normandy Sherwood in a poetic subversion of the original’s pedagogical style, and an introductory essay by James Stanley contextualizing the project in the history of acting.
Featured artists include Kate Valk, Juliana Francis Kelly, Black Eyed Susan, Paul Lazar, Okwui Okpokwasili, Edgar Oliver, Julie Atlas Muz, Radiohole, Sibyl Kempson, Pete Simpson, Jim Findlay, Ayesha Jordan and many others.
